Royce began has investment career at RMB Asset Management. During his 14 year tenure, he managed money across an array of product, eventually finding his niche as Head of Financials research. He was also a member of the asset allocation committee and played an integral part in its decision making. His learnings at RMB formed the basis for his multi-asset investment philosophy on which Obsidian Capital was founded. Royce co-manages the four investment strategies that Obsidian Capital offers. He is married, with two kids, and spends his downtime with a baited line in the Transkei waters. He is also a Comrades finisher and avid triathlon competitor.
Director, Portfolio Manager
Richard worked as senior investment professional at RMB Asset Management for 14 years, culminating in him holding the positions of Chief Strategist, Head of Resources research, and a member of the Asset Allocation Committee. Richard co-founded Obsidian Capital in 2007 and is responsible for overseeing the management of the concentrated suite of investment products that Obsidian Capital offers. He has a fascination for the macroeconomic environment and how it impacts incumbent investments. Richard is married, with three young kids, has a penchant for challenging multi-stage mountain biking races, and enjoys a glass (or two) of red wine.
Craig completed his articles at Grant Thornton where his clients included both listed and unlisted companies from a variety of different industries, including banking, industrial, retail, healthcare, and agriculture. He also participated in a four month secondment with Grant Thornton in New York. After completing his articles, Craig worked as a credit research analyst at RMB, focusing on high yield credit issuers. He joined Obsidian Capital as an investment professional in February 2012. Craig insatiable love of investing, his dogged determination to get to the “real” numbers, and his admirable work-ethic make him a valued member of the Obsidian investment team.
Warren graduated from UCT with a B.Bus.Sci in Finance. His early career experience was as a business analyst in the FMCG and hospitality industries where he focused on improving company profitability. He joined Obsidian Capital in March 2014. Warren’s primary responsibility is to communicate how and why investment decisions are made, providing a window into the thinking of the investment team. In addition, he enjoys looking for areas within the business that have potential for improvement, to the benefit of the company as a whole. Warren is married, has two children, enjoys running, reading, and travelling, and is increasingly drawn to the study of human psychology.
Jason completed his articles at EY where he was exposed to clients in the mining, financial services, and manufacturing industries. Post articles, he completed a short secondment to the EY Boston offices in their asset management audit division. Prior to joining Obsidian Capital, Jason worked for EY’s Transaction Advisory Services department, where he was involved in due diligence reviews and other corporate finance related activities. He joined Obsidian Capital in April 2014 and gravitates toward any tech or property related investments. Jason is recently married, fond of a Pastel de Nata, a game of poker, and a good whiskey.
Having completed his BCom Investment Management degree at WITS university, Liam joined Obsidian Capital as a graduate in May 2017. He is awaiting the result from his CFA level III examination. His responsibilities include trade execution, portfolio administration, and the relationship management of 3rd parties to whom non-investment functions have been outsourced. He is also being trained as an analyst. Liam is the youngest member of the team with very few stings attached, other than being a Manchester United supporter. He enjoys socialising with friends, spending time outdoors, and watching sport.
