It’s not easy being a South African investor. We must contend with chronic uncertainty about the future of our country as it tries to find equilibrium. Our emotional connection to where we live, and the identity we draw from it, makes it difficult to see the merits of our investments clearly.
But that’s only half the battle. The reality is that we live in an emerging market country who’s economic fortunes are inextricably tied to the global economy. The vast majority of investment opportunities we have are influenced by external factors that we cannot control.
The finer details of any investment must be sharply scrutinized. But the same goes for the environment in which that investment is domiciled. Keeping the bigger picture in mind reduces risk, improves the quality and quantity of investment ideas, and provides clarity of sight.
At Obsidian Capital, we’re big picture investment thinkers. Our purpose is to use our understanding of economic cycles, and how they influence the investments available to us, to identify the best opportunities for our investors. We don’t think money should be invested any other way.
